當初在選定紅袋鼠和鴯鶓做為國徽標誌的主要原因；是因為人們在那個年代時，一直都誤以為紅袋鼠和鴯鶓是只有前進，而沒有後退動作的動物。
只有前進；即象徵著進步。
實際上；有人經過仔細觀察，發現紅袋鼠和鴯鶓也是會有後退的動作，只是很少被人們見到而已。
在盾牌後方背景中的花，是澳大利亞的國花（英语：Golden Wattle），中文名稱是金合歡。
